GASOLINE

Based in Narromine, Xanthe McCrea is the artist behind the piece 'Gasoline'.

Much like her artwork, Xanthe McCrea is bright, authentic and an absolute celebration of colour.

Humble as ever, the 23-year-old visual artist radiates a gentle and warm disposition that makes you want to sit with a cup of tea and talk together for hours on end.

Spanning across a variety of mediums such as acrylics and oils, her artistic practice involves combining colour and texture derived from her surroundings.

Growing up in the New England region of New South Wales, Xanthe’s gravitation toward the art industry was inevitable. Her childhood was spent perched in trees on her farm - from dawn till dusk she would watch the world in motion, taking note of every vibrant colour and unique shape she could identify.

For Xanthe, pursuing her creative flair was less a question of ‘why?’ and more a question of ‘why not?’. Backed by her family, she studied the subject intently throughout high school and into adulthood as she moved to Sydney to study Fine Arts at the University of New South Wales.

Ever a country girl, Xanthe would visit her grandmother in the Blue Mountains most weekends, seeking reprieve from the city. Her grandmother – a professional artist – remains a great source of inspiration for Xanthe’s work.

In early 2020, she travelled to the Indian region of West Bengal for three weeks as part of her textiles major. The trip exposed to Xanthe the sheer diversity of colour and encouraged her to experiment more playfully in her work.

Coming home with a renewed sense of self; Xanthe’s current pieces are an expression of her experiences. Offering unapologetic splashes of colour and bold movement; the paintings are a dreamy exploration of organic shapes and lines pulled from the landscapes she frequents.

Xanthe is working full-time as a professional artist based in Narromine and is looking forward to further expanding her creative disciplines in the future.
