I SEE MOUNTAINS

Based in Moree NSW, Maisie Johnson is the artist behind the piece 'I See Mountains'.

When 17-year-old Maisie Johnson attended a weaving workshop in Sydney, she never anticipated the art form would become her passion and eventual side-hustle.

Accompanied by her mother, Maisie relished the experience of weaving for the first time and felt a sense of calm take over as she threaded the wool back and forth.

In the year following, Maisie continued to practice weaving and upon graduating high school, made an Instagram account, wanting to share her creations among friends.

Now, some six years later, Maisie’s page boasts custom woven pieces and original acrylic artworks bursting with colour and texture.

A creative through and through, the 24-year-old was born and raised in Moree - a small town in regional New South Wales.

Her mother a gardener and father an accountant, together they cultivated an environment perfectly suited to nurturing Maisie’s artistic and entrepreneurial flair.

Unsurprisingly, Maisie studied visual arts throughout school and continued to pursue her passion more intently when she moved to Brisbane to study. During her time in the city Maisie broadened her creative scope, trialling different disciplines such as ceramics and interior design.

It wasn’t until 2019 - when Maisie and her mother travelled to Thailand destined for an artist’s retreat - that the budding creative solidified her desire to take weaving seriously. Being the youngest of the group, Maisie took with her the intention of observing and channelling the skills of her superiors. When she returned home, Maisie begun taking commission orders.

Featuring vibrant colour ways and playful movement; her pieces are largely inspired by the feminine energy she surrounds herself with.

Being made of materials from all around the world, each woven design embodies a sense of uniqueness and is carefully planned and executed. As Maisie explains it, creating the woven artwork involves a meticulous yet “very therapeutic” process.

Maisie is currently based in Moree and hopes to expand her practice to a full-time gig in the future.
