Glam queens Lisa Bridge and Renée Hird believe in the power of good advice, making time for family and walking their own path.
How many years have you owned your own business?
We opened the Glamour Empire shop front in Centrepoint in 2015 – Lisa and I have very recently taken over as Duo Directors instead of the Trio with Susie (whom I’ve worked with since 2010) in the past few weeks!
How do you balance work and life responsibilities?
Renee: When I am home my focus is on my partner and our home life, spending quality time with him and with family. Trying to keep work separate overlaps, sometimes not letting it overtake home life is important to me.
Lisa: Work takes up such a large amount of our time, so I just try to be aware to make time for the things that are important to me outside of that, like relationships, family, health and downtime.
What’s the best business advice you have ever been given?
Renee: There is A LOT of great advice we have been given, and are still being given. I love it, I listen to it – trust yourself and go for it!
Lisa: Work hard, stay humble and it will all pay off in the end.
What keeps you up at night?
Lisa: A lot! All the things that get pushed to the side during a busy day that come to the surface of a night when everything slows down. As a mum, no matter the age of your child, you worry about them. In terms of business, you think about your clients, they may have shared something heavy that day. You think about the services you have completed that day, what you might do next time. Tasks that need to be completed the next day. Daily things happening in the salon, your staff. Short answer, thinking of how you can do better and be better personally and professionally.
Who inspires you and why?
Renee: People who are brave and not afraid to make a stand for what they believe in, walking their own path, I find that inspiring, and quite simply people who try.
Lisa: People who are kind, humble, have morals and a strong work ethic. I have family, friends, staff and clients who inspire me every day who have these qualities.
All small businesses have their challenges. What have been some of yours, and how did you girls persevere?
Renee: The drought, COVID. We have a strong business team behind us, coaching us through unprecedented times. We have always felt safe in their hands, along with supportive family and staff.
Lisa: COVID has been a major challenge for us, along with most businesses. We couldn’t have navigated our way through it without the support of our amazing team, loyal clientele, our family and partners.
