MY HAPPY PLACE

Originally from Dubbo NSW, Lizzy Stageman is the artist behind the piece 'My Happy Place'.

Each artwork produced by Lizzy Stageman represents a story deeply embedded in her life.

The self-taught, contemporary artist paints dreamtime stories depicting the core experiences that have shaped her journey as an indigenous woman raised in Dubbo, on Wiradjuri land. These stories – much like Lizzy herself – are authentic, vivid and incredibly poignant.

Her mother Indigenous and father English; Lizzy often attributes her cultural background in her creations. Through the use of monochrome colour palettes, her earlier “Journey” series fuses together the two distinct cultures in a celebration of diversity and healing.

Born a natural creative, the now 55-year-old recalled her earliest memories of art.

“My cousin Monty was an Aboriginal artist; he used to carve emu eggs and make mud horses on the riverbank. I followed his ventures closely and in turn, he taught me how to draw”

Lizzy’s tenacity for art remained unwavering throughout her upbringing. Her talent was recognised in high school - where she studied visual arts – and the budding artist was quickly offered a scholarship to the University of Newcastle. Unable to accept the invitation, Lizzy lost touch with her art.

“I pretty much rebelled for 35 years and didn’t pick up a paintbrush until I became sick in 2017”

In recent years, Lizzy’s world has been lined with a series of illnesses and poor health. Suffering a stroke in 2017 followed by a diagnosis of breast cancer in 2018; in a time of anguish, the powerhouse of a woman refused to let sickness define her.

Supported by her husband and three children, Lizzy returned to her art and hasn’t looked back since. Now, in her third year of painting full-time, she’s expanded her practice and has undertaken some surreal opportunities.

In 2021, Lizzy’s artworks “Children” and “Sweet Rain” were featured on ‘The Block’ in hallway week.

Based in Newcastle, NSW, Lizzy divvies her time between the city and Dubbo.
