OVER THE NEXT HILL

Based in Somerton NSW, Anna Charlton is the artist behind the piece, 'Over the Next Hill'.

When Anna Charlton isn’t busy tending to her property alongside her husband Lachie, she can be found sitting in her newly built studio space, crafting abstract landscapes from acrylic.

Featuring playful colour and palpable movement; the artworks are a vivid exploration of the creator’s natural surrounds. Through pulling inspiration from the lines and shapes that her Somerton (NSW) property has to offer, Anna paints intrepid pieces - awash with exuberant colour palettes and light-hearted energy.

Ever an artist, the 34-year-old experimented with various creative hobbies throughout her early childhood but didn’t pursue her love for painting until just three years ago. Her artistic process typically starts with a photo – a scenic outline which she captures during the early hours of dawn and throughout her working day on the farm. Once the background is sketched out on canvas, Anna then fills in the landscape with bold strokes and sweeping lines of diverse colour – an emotionally driven choice dependent on how she felt in the moment of taking the original.

“It’s a really fun process, nine times out of ten I’m with my kids and hubby when I’m snapping an outline and I love the little comments they make”

“Then like anything when you start your work happy, the right energy is pushing through you and the rest is just the fun part!”

The creative takes considerable inspiration from her grandmother – a gentle soul who would craft intricate embroideries and was forever immersed in the floral abyss of her garden. Anna’s recent works - including some commission pieces – reflect this filial connection, through the assemblage of vibrant botanical elements and imagery.

Last year, Anna was able to host her first ever solo-exhibition in Tamworth among supportive locals, friends and family. Her works are also often displayed at the Mae & Jeune collective store.

Anna is currently planning a 2022 exhibition and is looking forward to devoting more time to working in her studio. Her creative works and other ventures can be viewed via her Instagram @annakatedesigns.
