C7EVEN Communications Director Sara Crowe believes in making a plan, relishing your triumphs and not being afraid to ask for help.
How long have you owned your own business?
In July it will be seven years!
How do you balance work and life responsibilities?
With an incredibly supportive and very tolerant husband. Also with help from family and friends and by having an exceptionally talented team at C7EVEN. It takes a village!
What’s the best business advice you have been given?
I’ve been given a lot of great business advice, but something I like to remind myself of often is that culture fit is more important than skills on a CV. Skills can be taught, character can’t.
What keeps you up at night?
Binging TV shows (laugh) or worrying about my kids and what I’ve forgotten to do.
What and when was your ‘aha’ moment?
It was when Adam and I were talking about going out on our own and starting an agency. When we began putting our ideas down, and strategising, I had quite a profound ‘aha’ moment when I realised we could do it and that together we’d be great at it, and I’m pleased to say that I was right.
What advice would you give someone wanting to start their own business?
Make sure you can answer why you’re starting the business, what your business does, and why people should choose your business over another. Think about the pain points your business will solve, or the opportunities it will provide. Then make a plan, write it down and just go for it. Back yourself 100 per cent, be willing to work hard and don’t be afraid to ask for help along the way.
Where do you envision yourself in five years?
In five years I hope to be living in our new home in Tamworth, while leading the team at C7EVEN to new heights. Using my Psychology degree to help clients better communicate internally and during crisis response. Having more time to spend with my family and friends, and giving back to the industry and community through mentoring and volunteering.
What are you most proud of?
So many things, my kids for one. The beautiful life Rick and I have created in Tamworth. C7EVEN and all the things I have learned as a business owner, overcoming challenges and relishing our triumphs. Completing my comms degree and being so close to completing another (anyone who works full time and studies knows how good this feeling is). Being finalist for PR Leader of the Year in 2021. And hopefully there’ll be many more to come.
