SUMMER VACAY

Based in Orange NSW, Kelsie Davis is the artist behind the piece"Summer Vacay".

An avid creator and gentle soul; Kelsie Davis has long had a passion for crafting projects and products. Raised on a farm between Forbes and Condobolin, Kelsie’s childhood was divided between feeding her father’s Merino sheep and feeding her creative flair - through sketching and textile work.

Just under two years ago, together with her husband, Kelsie endeavoured to build her new home. As she sought to design and build the house, then pregnant Kelsie felt challenged to further explore her love of art. She spent every consecutive weekend for fifteen months working on the development of the house and so was able to experiment with inks, dyes and a variety of other products.

Now, the 30-year-old speech pathologist works part-time as an established regional artist, producing semi abstract paintings and digitally printed products such as swaddles and throws. Rooted in florals and landscapes; her works take considerable inspiration from seasonal changes and fashion trends.

“Subconsciously, fashion inspires my colour choices - seeing certain colour combos that I want to try together”

Her compositions differ from others by way of products used - rather than relying solely on acrylic paints, Kelsie also makes use of house paints and thickening agents to generate profuse surface texture and a matte finish.

Her artistic processes are largely spurred by intuition, with little preparation involved aside from the arrangement of a suitable background colour combination and placement of a few focal marks and shadows. Through this free-form methodology, Kelsie is able to release any inhibitions or expectations held over the outcome and liberally indulge in her creative energy.

Recently, Kelsie showcased her exuberant artworks in her first solo exhibition, which was hosted by Wattle and Twine. An absolute success, the exhibition sold-out within thirty hours. She has also joined the Jumbled team – with her artworks available through the collective store.

Kelsie is currently based in the city of Orange and is looking forward to the expansion of her product line as well as future collaborations – one of which is with Minnie and Me interiors.

5 QUESTIONS WITH KELSIE

WHO ARE YOUR THREE FAVOURITE ARTISTS?

So at the moment, I love when Kate Pittas and Kezz Brett pop up in my news feed. I think it is the looseness and abstract style that they have in common that makes me feel calm and intrigued. I also find myself staring at Liam Murphy's and Jen Sieves' work a lot lately, these two artists both have a lot happening within their paintings, but they look so simple and perfect and I love that! Whoops, can’t stick to just 3!

WHAT CAN'T YOU LIVE WITHOUT?

Other than the obvious (family, friends and painting) I can’t live without running, it clears my mind and resets me.

IN THREE WORDS, DESCRIBE YOUR ART STYLE.

Textured, bright, layered

LASTLY, WHAT'S YOUR MANTRA?

The act of creating something is always more important than the result.
